20 Years of Venture Leaders: The Impact Behind Switzerland's Global Startup Success

02.06.2026 13:20 Roberto Sikora

For 20 years, Venture Leaders has helped Swiss startups think beyond borders. What began as an international roadshow to Boston has evolved into the Swiss National Startup Team, connecting ambitious founders with investors, industry leaders, and innovation ecosystems around the world. Venture Leaders alumni are creating thousands of jobs, attracting billions in capital, developing breakthrough technologies, and building globally competitive companies.

The numbers tell a remarkable story

Over the past two decades, more than 5,000 startup applications have been reviewed, resulting in the selection of 643 high-potential Venture Leaders companies. Together, these startups have created more than 20,550 jobs, achieved a 78% survival rate, and raised CHF 9.5 billion in funding. But the true impact of Venture Leaders extends far beyond the numbers.

Building Global Ambition

From the beginning, Venture Leaders was designed to expose Swiss founders to the world's most competitive innovation ecosystems.

Over 62 international roadshows have taken startups to 13 cities across 6 countries, creating direct connections with investors, corporate partners, and entrepreneurial communities. Along the way, founders delivered more than 350 investor pitches, gaining visibility, investor feedback, and business opportunities that would have been difficult to access from Switzerland alone.

These experiences have helped transform promising startups into globally minded companies ready to compete on the international stage.

Creating Economic Value

The impact of Venture Leaders can be measured not only by startup success, but by the value created for Switzerland's economy.

The 643 Venture Leaders alumni companies represent a broad range of deep-tech sectors, from biotech and medtech to cleantech, fintech, robotics, and advanced engineering.

Innovation remains at the heart of this success. Active Venture Leaders startups report an average of 5.7 patents granted or pending, demonstrating the strong scientific and technological foundations behind many of Switzerland's most promising ventures.

Driving Diversity and Global Collaboration

Innovation thrives when different perspectives come together.

Today, 78% of Venture Leaders startups include international founders, reflecting the increasingly global nature of entrepreneurship in Switzerland. At the same time, nearly one-third of Venture Leaders startups include at least one woman founder, contributing to stronger teams and broader perspectives.

The Venture Leaders community spans all major innovation regions of Switzerland and brings together entrepreneurs from a wide range of nationalities, backgrounds, and disciplines. This diversity has become one of the program's defining strengths.

The Power of the Community

Perhaps the most unique impact of Venture Leaders cannot be measured in funding rounds or exits.

Over the years, alumni have become serial entrepreneurs, angel investors, venture capitalists, mentors, and ecosystem builders. Today, the community includes several serial entrepreneurs who became role models and more than a dozen founders who transitioned into venture investing, helping support the next generation of Swiss startups.

This cycle of founders helping founders has become one of the most valuable outcomes of the program. What begins as a roadshow often develops into lifelong friendships, business partnerships, and a shared commitment to strengthening Swiss innovation.

Looking Ahead

Twenty years after the first Venture Leaders roadshow, the mission remains unchanged: helping Switzerland's most ambitious founders compete on a global stage. In a world shaped by artificial intelligence, climate technologies, life sciences, robotics, and industrial innovation, access to international markets, investors, and strategic networks will become even more important.

Switzerland continues to produce exceptional science, engineering, and entrepreneurial talent. Venture Leaders exists to ensure that these innovations do not remain local success stories but become companies that create impact on a global scale.

The first twenty years demonstrated what is possible.
The next generation of Venture Leaders will define what comes next.
