Meet Scientific Visual Director Frédéric Falise and find out more about his relationship to social media

23.10.2020 08:47 Isabelle Mitchell

Venture Leader China Frédéric Falise is running Scientific Visual, a startup that takes the guesswork out of industrial crystal production by offering quality control scanners that visualize volume defects—such as bubbles, cracks, and cloudiness—in raw crystals. Learn more about Frédéric’s expectations for the Venture Leader China experience, and find out which ingredients help him elevate his cooking skills.

The Venture Leaders China 2020 will accelerate their expansion into the Chinese market and build a business network through meetings with top-notch investors and industry leaders. To introduce you to the members of the Swiss National Startup Team, we asked each entrepreneur to complete a short profile and choose four questions from a questionnaire about their personal and professional life.

Name: Frédéric Falise
Job title: Director of Scientific Visual

First touchpoint with Venturelab: Earlier this year, I attended a Venturelab webinar on adapting your business to COVID-19

“Scientific Visual designs and builds non-destructive quality control systems for inspecting semiconductor substrates prior to the expensive processing into wafer.”

How and where did you come up with the idea for your startup?
The initial idea came from the founder, Dr. Ivan Orlov, who successfully researched a way to synthesize non-toxic refractive index matching liquids, which enabled the internal inspection of industrial crystals without any preprocessing. The interest spurred the watch and LED industries to build an automatic scanning system to measure the precise location and morphology of every inherent defect stemming from the crystal growth process.

What do you expect from the Venture Leaders program, and how will it help you achieve your vision?
A significant portion of the industrial crystal production is in Asia. It is essential for Scientific Visual to be present in China and to be supported by Chinese investors.

What are your three favorite apps?
As COO of Scientific Visual, I am jumping from planning to engineering to finance to HR, sales, and marketing. No single tool can cover it all, but Microsoft Excel stays a safe bet. I prefer mastering a reduced number of tools rather than skimming dozens of them that are changing every six months or become out of fashion after a couple of years anyway.

How and where do you clear your mind?
Sailing on Lake Geneva and cross-country skiing in the Jura will clear my head in a matter of minutes...

How much time do you spend on social media?
As little as possible. Time is so precious that I do not want to spend more than necessary behind screens and keyboards.

What is always in your fridge?
A bottle of white wine besides all the nice ingredients grown in my garden to elevate top-chef meals.

What are you most proud of?
Besides my family and pretty full career, I enjoy the ability to sail anywhere in the world.

Last but not least, can you show us your workspace?
