Smart glasses have been considered the ‘next big thing’ for several years, but so far it has not materialised. One of the problems has been solved by Lausanne-based startup CREAL: images of virtual objects can be projected on to the glasses in such a way that a natural depth effect is created. The technology should become the standard for smart glasses and will be presented next February at the next MWC Barcelona. We interviewed CEO Tomas Sluka about what his expectations are going to Barcelona with the Venture Leaders Mobile program and the Swiss National Startup Team.
How is CREAL changing the Mobile industry?
Smart eyewear is destined to become everyone's everyday's mobile assistant in everything from cooking to neurosurgery. It will blend all our useful digital information into the real world around us - contextually, personalized and hands-free - making each and every one of us more creative and productive.
This is however not possible with flat displays in current VR/AR headsets as they provide images only with stereoscopic 3D illusion without optical depth. The lack of natural eye focus makes the VR/AR visual experience unpleasant.
We make a display which creates high-fidelity hologram-like images that are entirely natural for human vision. Hence, we bring one of the key missing links to the next big thing in mobile communication technology - a genuine three-dimensional display.
How important is it to be in Barcelona at the MWC?
MWC is all about mobile communication while our ambition is to become the key technology provider for the next big thing in mobile platforms. It is a must to be there.
What do you hope to achieve from the Venture Leaders Mobile 2020 roadshow?
I was already a part of Venture Leaders San Francisco last year. I, therefore, know that Venture Leaders provide us with additional network, credibility label, support and friendly company of like-minded entrepreneurs. Hence we hope to acquire new experience and reach more potential customers among producers of current VR/AR HW.
